MLS Publishing

MLS Publishing Co. (BMI) was set up primarily to administer the original compositions of Mark Schatz. It has also come to include works of artists that Mark has become associated with through various CD productions that he has done who did not have publishing companies of their own.

The publisher serves in the following ways:

1) Administer royalties: Through the company's affiliation (BMI in this case) broadcast and mechanical royalties are sent to the publisher, who passes the writer's share on to the writer.

2) Issue mechanical licenses: If some other party wants to record and release a composition, they are legally bound to receive a mechanical license from the writer or publisher if the composition is published. The publisher issues and keeps a record of these licenses.

3) The publisher will advertise or "pitch" the compositions in an effort to find other parties to record the material.
