MARK
SCHATZ: Brand New Old Tyme Way This was my first solo CD,
released in 1995. It highlights my original compositions on clawhammer
banjo (although I play mandolin on a few tracks and there's a
light-hearted bass duet with Roy) backed up by a stellar configuration
of musicians including Stuart Duncan, David Grier, Mike Compton, Roy
Huskey Jr., Jerry Douglas and Bela Fleck (who also produced the CD). --
TIM O'BRIEN: Red on Blonde I've always been a Dylan fan, but hearing Tim sing this collection of Bob Dylan's songs gave me a whole new appreciation both for the genius of Dylan and for the peerless artistry of Tim O'Brien. This should be a part of everyone's music collection. --
THE BLUEGRASS ALBUM BAND: Sweet Sunny South These albums represent a
flawless treatment of mostly traditional bluegrass material by the best
of the second generation of bluegrass musicians. Because of some
scheduling difficulties, Vassar Clements and I sat in for Todd Phillips
and Bobby Hicks on this particular volume. All live harmony and no
overdubs on this one. What a treat! -- BLUEGRASS '98, 2000 & the COMPILATION Ultimate Pickin' The rhythm section of the band
that recorded these volumes -- Scott Vestal, Wayne Benson, Jeff Autrey
& yours truly -- is one of the most driving and easy to groove with
of any that I've ever played with. Lots of hot picking on these mostly
instrumental projects with a variety of new and old tunes, including a
few of my own. INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS: This is a very comprehensive and step-by-step approach to learning to play bluegrass bass. The same skills, however, can be applied to a wide range of music including country, folk & old-time. I demonstrate left and right-hand technique, building a bassline from the ground up, slap bass, walking bass, and playing in 3/4 time. This is shown in context with the help of David Grier on guitar and Richard Bailey on banjo. I discuss the rudiments of music theory, how to amplify your bass, and a variety of other bass-related topics that are helpful to beginners and to working bass players. ![]() ![]() Intermediate & Beginning level videos are available on VHS and DVD. You can purchase one or both videos here.
